Valgarv was originally born as an Ancient Dragon by the name of Val Agares. Many years ago there was a war called the Kouma war, between the Golden dragon clan and the evil clan better known as the Mazoku. The Ancient dragon clan did not want to get involved in the war and wanted to live in peace. The Golden Dragons, however, saw this as a threat and were worried that the more powerful Ancients were threatening them. So the Gold clan massacred all of the Ancient clan, leaving a young Val as the last of his kind. Since then Val had wandered the desert barely alive, evading the Golden Dragons when he stumbled upon Maryuu-oh Garv.

Garv, who I assume felt sorry for him, offered Val to become a mazoku like him and his servant, saying it would be the perfect revenge on their enemies if they were to survive. Val accepts, dies, and comes back reborn as Valgarv with a horn sticking out of his forehead as a symbol of his mazoku nature. He lived with Garv as his servant for at least 1000 years but then one day he finds out his Lord Garv was murdered. Of course we all know Hellmaster Phibrizo killed Garv during Next, which sets off the plot for Try. Valgarv was led to believe that Lina Inverse killed his beloved master and vowed revenge for his savior.

Sometime later he teams up with Almayce who comes from the Overworld. Almayce promised Valgarv he would help him kill Lina Inverse if Valgarv agreed to help summon the Dark Lord Dark Star, the equivalent of Ruby Eye in this world. Valgarv agrees but afterwards he believes that Almayce betrayed him. So Valgarv decided to summon Dark Star himself, thinking it to be the best way to have revenge on both Lina Inverse and the Golden Dragons at once for when Dark Star is summoned to their world he will purify it. (In other words destroy everything.) Valgarv eventually succeeds and merges with Dark Star becoming one being with the Dark Lord. Dark Star/Valgarv is defeated though by Lina and co. but is reborn and Filia decides to raise Valgarv as atonement for her race's sins.
