Personalities

(Webmistress Note:) These interpretations of Filia and Valgarv's personalities are how they appear to me and are purely my opinions. Do not flame me if you do not agree with something here, it's just how I see things, ain't nothing wrong with that. I'm putting all my V/F biases aside.

FILIA UL COPT

We first meet Filia Ul Copt in Try the third season of the anime Slayers. Try is somewhat revolved around Filia and her journey of personal discovery while she tries to keep the prophecy of Dark Star from coming into fruition. Most people don't like her because of this for they believe that it forces the original Slayers more into the background.

Filia Ul Copt is an extremely passionate person but when we first meet her she seems to be cool, calm, collected, with an aura of mystery. This doesn't last very long and we find out that she is really hyperactive and also can be very temperamental. She is still quite young for a dragon and has been sheltered all of her life, the first time she went out of the sanctity of her temple was when she went to go find Lina. Because of her sheltered life she is very naive along with an aura of innocence, but there are also some down points to her sheltered life as well.

For instance she grew up believing that the way of the Golden Dragons was the only right way and anything else was blasphemous. She has strong religious views and can be quite fanatical about them. Filia does listen to others but can be quite condescending to others whose opinion slightly differs from hers. Once she has her mind made up about something she will usually stick right to it. She may appear to be arrogant but this is only because of her naive nature, since really she was taught to think this way.

Filia has a temper that rivals that of Lina's especially when things aren't going her way. She will not hesitate to insult Xellos in some way and the minute he retaliates with a comment of his own, all hell literally breaks loose. She hates Xellos for what he did to her kind, but when she finds out what happened to Valgarv's race she begins to feel unsure and maybe perhaps a bit hypocritical and Xellos exploits this. Things are no longer how they appear and Filia begins to question if the way she has been taught all her life was truly the right one.

Despite her violent nature, Filia has a gentle and kind heart and is the type of person who hates to see anyone no matter who they are, in pain. She developed a great sense of sympathy for Valgarv and was notably hesitant to destroy him so that the world would be saved.

After finding out the truth of her kind, Filia gives up her role as a priestess most likely because she is ashamed of herself. Even though she wasn't even alive when it all happened she blames herself. She lacks a sense of self-confidence but is one of the most powerful of the Slayers. Combined with her strength as a dragon along with her knowledge of holy magic she is quite the formidable foe.

While Filia appears to be mature and lady-like she can also be quite childlike at times. She gets overly excited at finding antiques or rare items and likes to spend time building rock people and making cats cradle. She also has the qualities of a daydreamer and I see her to be a true romantic at heart.

Now do you see why I like her?

VALGARV

Ohmigod the angst potential with this guy!! Valgarv is THE anti-hero. Out of all the Slayers characters he is by far the most serious and tortured of them all. It is understandable why Valgarv is the way he is. After years of torture and pain Valgarv has created impenetrable walls around him. On the outside, Valgarv appears to be cool and calculating but he also has an air of arrogance about him. Automatically he assumes that he can defeat Lina Inverse and is even cocky enough to say that she is running away from him before they even actually meet. He has a rude demeanor especially to ones who irritate or annoy him. While he is cunning in battle he tends to get a little carried away and will rush into things a bit prematurely.

Valgarv is by no means to be taken lightly though, he is extremely violent when provoked and possesses the powers of both a dragon and a mazoku, not to mention the powers of a god and dark lord when he becomes one with Dark Star. When he feels cornered he will call upon his powers of his Ancient Dragon heritage although this causes him severe pain and thus makes him vulnerable. He can hold his own and has bested Lina at times, he even once managed to take Xellos down. It is quite the task to get on his good side mainly because he doesn't trust many people, he only trusted Almayce up to a certain point.

Valgarv borders on the line of insanity. He hates Lina Inverse and Xellos along with the majority of all the human, dragon, and mazoku races. He blames Lina for Garv's death even though it was not her fault, Valgarv would not care however he probably figured that since she was there she was a part of it. Or it could be he was just too set on revenge that it didn't matter who he killed, just as long as someone died so he could avenge his beloved Lord.

That brings a new point. The driving force through most of Try for Valgarv is Garv himself. In Val's eyes Garv was his savior. Garv took him in when the world shunned him away and gave him a new purpose. But that purpose was the wrong one, it was revenge against his enemies. He followed Garv through a millennia, albeit blindly, and considered him as his mentor while inheriting his battle lust. When Garv died, Valgarv took it upon himself to finish his work, although Garv wanted to rule the world not destroy it.

Valgarv has a tender side that he shows very rarely but it is there, underneath all the sharpened exteriors there lies a confused child. He was discriminated for reasons he could not help let alone understand until many years later. The genocide of his race was a very traumatic event in Val's life and left him extremely traumatized with horrible visions and flashbacks. He saw himself in the forms of Jillas and Gravos and in his own way took pity on them. He made them as his servants and while they are not the most competent he doesn't mistreat them. Also he senses a kindred spirit in Filia and cannot seem to bring real harm on her even though she was born of the race who murdered his own.
